HACKATHON mission

The goal of this hackathon is to analyze the nursing home data provided by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and create visualizations to communicate the resource constraints faced by the nursing home.

TASK 1 - State Level Analysis of Staffing Shortages in the United States

  • The below time series describes the percentage of Nursing Homes that faced a shortage of: a.Aides, b.Clinical Staff, c.Nursing staff, d.Other Staff.

  • The line represents the percentage of clinics that faced a shortage of respective staff/aides in that particular week for that specific state.

  • We can select multiple types of staff to compare the differences between staff shortages within the state

  • The trend shows that there is an increase in shortage of staff after March 2021 because this was the time when US government passed a mandate saying that Healthcare workers need to be vaccinated

  • Due to this mandate many healthcare workers started resigning from their jobs which led to an increase of staffing shortage

  • The map above gives us a distribution percentage of nursing homes in that particular state that faced a shortage for the type of staff and year that has been selected in the filters

  • We can also notice that the percentage of nursing homes that faced a shortage is higher for the midwest states

TASK 2 - State Level Analysis on Availability of COVID Supplies

  • The above map shows us the state level analysis of the availability of various covid related equipment like gloves, eye protection shields, hand sanitizers etc

  • We can select the type of equipment in the filters to learn about the availability by state and year

  • Selecting multiple years shows us the average availability of the equipment over the selected years

  • Hovering over the state also provides us a tooltip visualization that shows us the confirmed covid cases per week and gives us information about the trend of COVID over the years
